If something operates at 1 Hz, it repeats once every second. At 1,000 Hz, it repeats one thousand times per second. At 1,000,000 Hz, (also written as 1 MHz) it repeats one million times per second. The number just tells you how fast the signal is cycling.

Some frequencies fall within what is called the audio range, which is roughly 1 to 20,000 Hertz.

Higher frequencies move beyond the audio range into what is called the RF range. These are much faster signals that extend into the millions of Hertz. 

The researchers that originally developed this technology discovered that different uses required different levels of frequencies.
